How to protect yourself from online fraud. How to protect yourself and your loved ones from financial fraud.

Internet fraud has existed for about as long as the World Wide Web itself. Withdrawing money from an account without the owner's knowledge, stealing passwords and PIN codes, making easy money on the Internet and making deposits at incredible interest rates, online casinos are all types of financial fraud.

Online fraud is understood as the actions of cybercriminals who are aimed at illegally obtaining finances, valuable items or personal information. An attempt to steal is always carried out online - via the phone or the Internet, a meeting directly between the fraudster and the victim is practically impossible.

Several million dollars worth of purchases are made online every day. Not surprisingly, cybercriminals regularly try to get hold of some of this amount. For this, various schemes were invented. It is enough just to familiarize yourself with them in order to minimize the risks of losing money, property or personal information.

What are the ways of online scams?

Depending on the methods of online fraud, I distinguish between identity theft and phishing, and they are already subdivided into several additional fraud options, with the help of which the scammers try to get hold of your money.

The most common and primitive way is to make a payment without receiving the goods. A potential victim, choosing a product on the website of one of the online stores or sites with ads, makes a payment, but does not receive the product. A similar scheme can also sell tickets for a bus, train or long-distance plane. When boarding, it simply turns out that the seat is occupied by other passengers or simply does not exist. Most often, such fraudulent schemes are implemented by fly-by-night sites that attract customers with short-term promotions and large discounts on popular products. That is why it is recommended to make purchases on proven resources that have been trading for more than a year and you can easily familiarize yourself with reviews of other users about the intricacies and benefits of cooperation.

Similar fraudulent schemes are also used on popular classifieds sites when a potential buyer pays for a specific product but does not receive it. To avoid this situation, check the account activity times. It is unlikely that a user with an account that is three years old or more will engage in fraud. The ideal option is to offer a personal meeting or agree to receive a parcel through a transport company and cash on delivery.

Letters from "Nigerian princes"

Despite the fact that the scheme originated many years ago, it continues to be actively implemented online. A potential victim receives a letter in which it is proposed to transfer a large amount from one account to another, having received a certain percentage for participation. But, before that, you need to pay several taxes or fees in advance. Despite the obvious inconsistencies in the description, there are always a few gullible people who are ready to pay for dubious transactions.

Erroneous translations

In this case, a notification about the replenishment of the account will be sent to your mobile phone, bank account or any electronic wallet. After some time, the user receives a call from a person who reports that he made a mistake in the transfer process and asks to return the funds to a specific account. In most cases, a respectable citizen returns funds, but after a while it turns out that funds have been withdrawn from his accounts in a double amount.

It works very simply. In many banks, upon submitting the corresponding application, the operator returns the erroneous payment. It is very simple to avoid such a situation, it is enough to carry out all transfers through the official application of the bank or mobile operator. In some cases, a potential victim may receive an SMS notification that a certain amount has been credited to the account. But, if you look closely, you can see that the message came not from a bank, but from an ordinary subscriber. In this case, fraudsters simply rely on the carelessness of users who will not check the balance.

Winning a million

Many users received messages by phone or e-mail, informing about the receipt of a large cash prize, an apartment, a car. But to get such a prize, you need to pay a small duty or tax. If you have not participated in any contests, do not trust such messages.

Investment in the future

Users are invited to pay a certain amount for the course to learn a certain methodology for earning large funds, including investing in companies. This includes a list of "promising" companies that will recoup your investment over time. But just a couple of minutes of checking will help make sure that no companies exist, and the courses are just a snag for gullible users.

Marriageable girl

In this case, the scammers communicate with the guys on behalf of cute and pretty girls, attracting attention to themselves. Gradually falling in love with guys in In the process of correspondence, requests for money transfers and gifts begin, less often money is asked for a ticket for a personal meeting. Gullible young men transfer funds to a specific account, and then the girl either continues asking for money or stops communicating. It is very simple to prevent such situations, it is enough to refuse to transfer funds to unfamiliar girls.

The online fraud schemes do not end there, but we have suggested the most common schemes.

Who can be considered an object of virtual fraud and how to protect yourself?

Not only a person can be considered a victim of criminal actions, but also any device with access to the Internet. In the process of committing malicious intent, a variety of tricks and methods of deception are used, malicious software is developed, etc. To protect yourself and your data from possible attacks, you just need to know the main sources of such a threat. According to experts, these can be considered:

  • sites for buying tickets or consumer goods;
  • dating sites;
  • spam emails.

It is enough just to adhere to the basic recommendations that will help protect against cybercriminals. The most important thing is your attentiveness. Carefully check any messages that may only come to you by email or mobile phone.

Also, make sure that your data could not get to intruders, so you should not disclose it, including on unknown sites.
